Just Energy and InnoWind - with small-holder land owners and farmers - are building a wind farm using a unique business model that re-invests a substantial portion of the revenues earned from developing the project back into equity for the local community to own.
Two wind farms, with a generating capacity of 250 megawatts and representing an investment of R5.9-billion, will be built by the Irish company, Mainstream Renewable Power. The wind farms are in the Nama Khoi municipality in Northern Cape and in the Cape Winelands district.
Sere adds 100MW to the grid and will save nearly six million tons of greenhouse gas emissions over its 20-year lifespan. Each year, it will supply enough energy to power about 124 000 homes. Next on Eskom's renewables agenda is a concentrated solar power plant.
South Africa's first commercial wind farm to contribute directly to the national power grid went on line in July 2008, operating from a Western Cape region that has the potential to become the wind powerhouse of Africa.
