Young Africans, who are fed up with the unrelenting negative stereotypes of the continent spread by the mainstream media, have started a new campaign on social media.
There is more to Durban than its year-round perfect weather, big surf and golden beaches – though these are reason enough to visit. Durbs is a melting pot of Zulu, Indian and colonial culture, offering good food, great music, a long history and an active lifestyle.
The prized rooibos, indigenous to the south-western reaches of South Africa, has long been used by the Khoi and San as a refreshing drink and a medicinal herb. Today it is enjoyed around the world. Its following has grown so vast that a pair of enterprising sisters in a small rural town has set up the Rooibos Route.
By foot or by bus, there are several tours on offer taking in the rich history of Johannesburg. For the first time, the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation is going as far east as Bezuidenhout Valley, and as far south as Kliptown, site of the famed Freedom Charter gathering.

A mountain bike ride along the route taken by the 19th century explorer and naturalist, William Burchell, led to some surprising discoveries, such as the hut where the sick adventurer was forced to take shelter while travelling through the wild frontiers beyond the old Cape Colony.
