South Africa has a rich sailing history, and boasts some top international events. Chief of these is the South Atlantic Yacht Race - originally known as the Cape to Rio, currently as the Cape to Bahia - the longest continent-to-continent yacht race in the southern hemisphere.
South African Bruce Dalling, winner on handicap of the 1968 Transatlantic Single-Handed Yacht Race - a victory that provided the spark for the formation of the Cape to Rio Yacht Race - died in Howick on Monday at the age of 69.
Team Shosholoza, after a strong showing in its first America's Cup, has lodged South Africa's second entry in sailing's most prestigious event - despite not having a sponsor yet. Team director Salvatore Sarno is confident the money will come for "the country's best ambassadors on one of the world's most influential platforms."
After three-and-a-half years on the America's Cup class circuit, South Africa's Team Shosholoza remains the darling of the international sailing media. But the name increasingly being mentioned in specialist sailing publications is that of Jason Ker, principal designer of Shosholoza's yacht RSA 83.
