The UN World Food Programme and Food and Agriculture Organisation have praised South Africa for a R140-million (US$21.5-million) contribution to the agencies' operations in southern Africa.

When volunteers from Thuthukani clinic, north of Johannesburg, began doing home visits to people suffering from Aids and TB, they found that most of them had no food. So they started a food garden, introduced permaculture - and now they're feeding their patients, themselves, and some paying customers besides.
'Sustainable development' was the mantra to gyrate to in World Summit year. Food and Trees for Africa, a dynamic NGO which promotes greening and food security through permaculture, cottoned on to the idea 12 years ago.
