The State of the Nation Address by President Jacob Zuma took place on 11 February 2016, an important date for the country. It was the anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison 26 years ago. We take a look at the dignitaries as they arrived at Parliament.
South African artists present a unique South African identity to the world, and the high prices many local artists fetch internationally are testament to the growing interest in the calibre of local artists – as well as in that identity.
For over two decades the Bag Factory in downtown Joburg has helped develop South African art with residency programmes in its 16 studios, where both young and experienced artists can collaborate, share ideas or simply inspire each other.
The funky little suburb of Woodstock on the edge of the Cape Town city bowl, is fizzing with creative energy. It is helping to power the Mother City's design engine, which has already conjured up Design Indaba and Guild Design Fair, and it is revelling in the World Design Capital designation this year.
Led by the FNB Joburg Art Fair, South Africa is becoming something of a home for contemporary art from across the continent and the African diaspora. Joining it are another Joburg fair, as well as a Cape Town outing and a permanent gallery.
The Museum of African Design is an innovative creation in downtown Joburg that is championing a new model. A gallery without a permanent collection, it "allows an institution that's interested in the contemporary to stay contemporary".

Cape Town’s harbours are hives of activity, with ships arriving and heading out to sea around the clock. Freighters from overseas drop anchor soon after they get here, while passenger liners often cruise the coastline and visit tourist hotspots like Robben Island.
