The first fashion film festival in South Africa has been planned for Cape Town. Submissions have been called for the Mercedes-Benz Bokeh International Fashion Film Festival. And the winning film will be nominated for the International Fashion Film Awards in Hollywood.
Some of the country's top designers took their spring/summer 2014 collections to South African Fashion Week. It set the tone for the next season in bright colours and natural fabrics, and featured a first-time partnership with Universal Music South Africa.
The designer meets the choreographer, and together they make happy music. Black Coffee's Jacques van der Watt and Vuyani's Gregory Maqoma have worked together for more than a decade, culminating in a performance of purity and distortion, a surreal journey from outer space to the landscapes of Earth.
The elegant, well-mannered and impeccably dressed African man is not a new phenomenon. But he is getting global exposure in the internet age. From the sapeurs of Congo to small town Namibia, these sartorial leaders are doing interesting things. But it is more than just the clothes; it is about meaning, manners and respect.
Designer David Tlale was the first South African to show his collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. He is now returning to the Big Apple for the third time, this time with his winter collection. He has also signed up an agency in the United States for his label, and soon will be looking for a showroom in New York.
