The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has declared 2009 to be the International Year of Natural Fibres, and South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is backing the initiative.
The amount of local land planted with genetically modified crops increased by 30% over the past year, with South Africa joining an increasing number of countries that are adopting "biotech" crops to better withstand harsh farming conditions.
South Africa's struggling cotton sector is set to be boosted by a R150-million investment project in the Eastern Cape. The initiative is expected to create some 6 000 seasonal jobs and empower local black farmers.
