South Africa's construction confidence reached a four-year high in the first quarter as firms restored profitability following a prolonged period of slow growth, according to the Bureau for Economic Research.

South African business confidence improved in June following the dip in May, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry reports, while cautioning that the uncertain global situation would test the recovery going forward.

Buoyed by a supportive Budget and dropping interest rates and inflation, South Africa bucked the global trend by recording an increase in consumer confidence in the first quarter of 2009.

Political and economic stability, low interest rates, strong consumer spending and a relatively stable rand have lifted South African business confidence to record highs.
