Card payments for SA’s spaza shops
MasterCard has partnered with local company Blue Label Telecoms in a drive to equip 22 000 small traders and rural shops in South Africa with point of sale devices, enabling them to accept card payments for the first time.
Biometric grant cards beating fraud
The South African Social Security Agency has cancelled over 150 000 grants since introducing a biometric grant payment system in March 2012, amounting to an annual saving of R150-million. Almost 22-million social grant beneficiaries have re-registered on the new system.
Absa in multi-currency card first for SA
South African bank Absa has launched a multi-currency travel prepaid cash card
through MasterCard, which is available in four currencies and is a first for the country
and the continent.
Fill up and pay with your credit card
Motorists in South Africa will now be able pay for fuel with their credit cards. Filling stations that cannot handle credit card payments have been urged to put up prominent notices to this effect.
