When they discovered they were hopelessly prepared for university after matriculating from a township school, Nonhlanhla Masina and Melusi Radebe decided to make sure other youngsters did not flounder. They set up the African School of Excellence, which is having great success in raising academic levels.

Three Cape Town scientists paddled more than 2 000km from its source in the Lesotho highlands, across the continent, and ended with the fishermen of Alexander Bay. They came back with great stories and vital data for conservation, botany and climate change.
