Izulu Lami (My Secret Sky), the first feature film by Madoda Ncayiyana, won two awards at the 2009 International Pan African Film Festival in Tarifa, Spain in May, including the Best Actress award for 11-year-old Sobahle Mkhabase.
Telling the story of two children who travel from the countryside to the city after their mother’s death, Izulu Lami features a cast of mainly young children who had never acted professionally before, discovered through extensive casting from the townships and informal settlements of Durban to the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal.
The film received standing ovations at recent screenings in Japan and Zanzibar, and was a hit at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in France. Its had its South African premiere at the Durban International Film Festival in July before opening at cinemas countrywide on 17 August.
