Hillbrow Theatre Project
Throughout the year, our facilitators conduct after-school performance arts programmes for children and youth. These drama workshops are held at local inner-city High Schools, and on afternoons and Saturday mornings in the fun, creative haven of the Hillbrow Theatre.
Play is the work of children. It is through play, acting and dance that children are able to express, understand and deal with the issues and challenges they face in their daily lives. Drama demands empathy for different personalities, cultures, religions and ways of living, and gives children and youth the opportunity to learn and practice the life skills of teamwork, communication, tolerance and mutual respect. Playmaking allows young people to explore and dramatise creative solutions, develop self-confidence and responsibility, and to unleash the power of their imagination.
The Inner City High Schools Drama Festival, a highlight on our calendar, showcases the plays created in collaboration with the learners, facilitators and teachers. This event, in partnership with the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival, is held in September.
