The Play Your Part campaign has extended its media reach with the launch in October 2011 of a new national and community radio-driven initiative.

The aim of Play Your Part (PYP), a Brand South Africa campaign launched in June 2011, is to inspire all citizens to contribute to positive change, become involved in doing good, and care for each other and the environment around them.

The radio initiative asks listeners to think of a concept that accurately and concisely describes how they feel about South Africa.

“How would you describe our extraordinary country: our amazing cities, our industries, the opportunities, the challenges, the energy and the spirit that has brought us to where we are today?” asks PYP.

Listeners are then encouraged to submit their ideas via text message to the number supplied by the station.

Possibilities and diversity

Stations such as Radio Riverside (Northern Cape province), Letlhabile Community Radio (North-west province), Qwaqwa Radio (Free State province) and Vukani Community Radio (Eastern Cape province) have drawn an enthusiastic response from their listeners.

“SA my zone of greatness, full of possibilities and diversity,” was the contribution from a 23-year-old Radio Riverside listener.

“Helping the schools make children understand more about life and career, creating more facilities for school, engaging children with community services.etc.,” was the view of a 17-year-old from Ukhosi FM, the national station aimed at the isiZulu-speaking community.

An enthusiastic 19-year-old Qwaqwa listener submitted: “South Africa is a rainbow nation full of beautiful natural and recreational sites in all the provinces and the atmosphere is superb!”

Many listeners agreed that the young people of South Africa have a major part to play in the future of the country, but that there should be more job opportunities and better basic education.

Some said that volunteering for community projects should be a priority, or that people should simply have more regard for their fellows.

Not all responses were overwhelmingly positive. Other listeners expressed their dissatisfaction with issues such as foreign nationals settling in South Africa, but conceded that by working together, problems can be ironed out.

To submit their ideas for making South Africa an even better place for all, supporters can visit the Play Your Part website, listen out for the radio spot on their local station and send their text message to the number supplied, or send a tweet to the PYP Twitter page.
