Hooters set to open in Cape Town

Chanticleer Holdings is set to open its third Hooters restaurant in South Africa – and has plans for at least four more Hooters in the country over the next five years.

“Hooters on Edward Street” will open for business at the Manhattan Plaza on Cape Town’s Edward Street in March, the company announced on Monday.

Chanticleer’s other South African Hooters restaurants are “Hooters on the Rocks” in Durban and “Hooters on the Buzz” in Johannesburg. The popular US fast food chain is known for targeting male customers with a mostly female staff.

The trio of restaurants is part of Chanticleer’s joint venture with SGShaw Food. The firms plan to open at least four additional Hooters restaurants in South Africa over the next five years, and believes there is a still greater opportunity in the region.

“Hooters on Edward Street” occupies nearly 557 square metres in the Manhattan Plaza, which is filled with popular bars, nightclubs and restaurants that are expected to create substantial traffic for Hooters. The new space can accommodate 280 people and includes a large outdoor patio.

Chanticleer Holdings chief executive officer Michael Pruitt said: “Opening our third Hooters restaurant in South Africa affirms our successful track record of extending the Hooters brand in Africa.

“We see tremendous opportunity in this region and the optimism, energy and entrepreneurial spirit evident in Cape Town makes it a critical location for attracting locals and tourists to the renowned Hooters brand.

“Our partnership with SGShaw Food has proven invaluable,” Pruitt added. “Their expertise in food services, paired with their proven ability to identify, secure and develop our Durban and Johannesburg locations, gives us high expectations for the new Cape Town location.”

SGShaw Food chairman Spencer Shaw said: “There is a tremendous amount of excitement surrounding the opening of Hooters on Edward Street, and we are eager to exceed the expectations of Cape Towns’ multi-cultural local and tourist communities.

“On the heels of winning the Restaurant Association of South Africa award for service excellence, we are committed to bringing they same high standard of service to all Hooters locations throughout South Africa.”
