Passenger thumbs-up for Gautrain

South Africa’s first high-speed train has carried 5.8-million passengers between Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport since August 2011, with passengers rating it above 90% for service.

The Gautrain currently carries between 30 000 and 34 000 passengers a day, about one-third of whom use weekly or monthly passes, spokeswoman Kelebogile Machakathe said in a statement on Wednesday.

High service, punctuality ratings

Machakathe said that, in a survey conducted by Catalyst Research, passengers had rated the service highly for train punctuality (94%), convenience (94%), value for money (93%), safety and security (92%), and cleanliness (92%).

“Train services have consistently run at punctualities exceeding 98 percent,” Machakathe said, adding that most Gautrain passengers were women.

“The largest group of passengers (35 percent) fall into the 35-49 year age bracket, while about 20 percent are younger than 24 years.”

About 35 percent of Gautrain users were black, 12 percent Asian, 45 percent white, and eight percent coloured.

Zero contact crimes

Machakathe said less than three incidents of theft per million passengers had been reported since the start of operations between Hatfield in Pretoria and Rosebank in Johannesburg in August.

No contact crime, such as muggings, had been reported on the Gautrain, she said.

“We remain vigilant with regards to the safety and security of our passengers on our system. If they ever feel nervous or threatened on the Gautrain, they can phone our security hotline 0800 811 811.”

“Over 400 security guards and 800 CCTV cameras keep a watchful eye over the entire system.”
