Boxer Brian Mitchell is a legend. He was the first South African boxer to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, which happened in 2009, when he was 49 years old.

The honour recognises Mitchell’s talent and skill in the ring, and ranks him alongside other boxing greats such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Rocky Marciano. Many experts regard Mitchell as the best South African pugilist of all time, and today he is one of the country’s foremost boxing trainers.

He retired from the ring in 1995, with a record of 49 fights, 46 wins, two draws and a single defeat. Mitchell holds the world record for successfully defending his junior lightweight title 12 times.

His induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, 13 years after he packed away his boxing gloves, was a welcome surprise for the boxer. He describes the accolade as one of the highlights of his career.

Mitchell was known for always entering his fights with dedication and in peak physical condition – possibly the secret to his success that earned him his victories.
