Africa DayThis year’s Africa Day is even more of a special occasion as there is a real opportunity on the horizon which binds all Africans together – Soccer World Cup 2010. As the event for 2006 is about to kick off in Germany, we should all rededicate ourselves not only to making the 2010 event a truly African one but highly successful too. It offers us the opportunity to change views on our continent and to point out what exciting possibilities – and realities – abound in Africa. Already the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development predicts that Africa’s economic growth this year will reach 5.8%; a real increase on last year’s 5%. It’s expected that the substantial spin-offs arising from an African hosted 2010 World Cup will help to spur this growth even further, creating a better continent for us all to live in.

Between now and 2010, we at the International Marketing Council of South Africa will be vigorously marketing South Africa to the world. But we are fully aware that while 2010 may be hosted by us, it is essentially an African event.

We particularly give our support to the five African countries on whose shoulders the hopes of Africa will be carried at the 2006 World Cup. To Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Tunisia – all of us on the continent will be watching your progress with excitement and hope that when South Africa hosts the 2010 event one of you will be the defending champion.

Go well and bring the World Cup back to Africa!
