International Marketing Council responds to crime website
Friday, 30 June 2006

As a partnership dedicated to marketing South Africa internationally, the International Marketing Council of South Africa (IMC) has noted the attempt by Mr Neil Watson to launch a website dedicated to profiling crime in the country.

Like all South Africans, the IMC is painfully aware of the negative and traumatic effects of crime on individuals, communities, the economy and society at large, and on international perception of South Africa.

The IMC believes public awareness of and vigilance against crime incidents is essential in the fight against crime.

However, we are concerned about the appropriateness of any information campaign that focuses only on the negatives and ignores the growing range of successes in the fight against crime.

Any campaign that instils fear and undermines the economic opportunities created by increased international tourism and investment can only add to the very problem Mr Watson seeks to address.

The IMC would be pleased to explore with Mr Watson and others ways to draw attention to the issue of crime without harming the country, and to celebrate our successes.
